Maria of Jülich-Berg was a significant figure in the political landscape of 16th-century Germany. As the sole heir to the estates of Jülich, Berg, and Ravensberg, her marriage to John III, Duke of Cleves, resulted in the formation of the United Duchies of Jülich-Cleves-Berg, a significant territorial union at the time.

She was born on 17 January 1512 in Düsseldorf and was the daughter of John III, Duke of Cleves and Count of Mark, and Maria of Jülich-Berg, daughter of the Duke of Jülich-Berg. Sibylle was named after her maternal grandmother, Sibylle of Brandenburg.

Life. John was born on 10 November 1490, as the son of John II, Duke of Cleves, and Mathilde of Hesse. In 1510, at the age of 19, John married Duchess Maria of Jülich-Berg, daughter of Duke William IV of Jülich-Berg and Sibylle of Brandenburg, who became heiress to her father's estates Jülich, Berg and Ravensberg.
Maria was her father’s only legitimate child. Maria’s half-brother, Johann of Jülich, was illegitimate. Johann of Cleves-Mark and Maria were wed in 1509, and Johann became the Duke of Jülich-Berg jure uxoris after Maria’s father died in 1511.
