Born Victor Christian William Cavendish, the oldest son in the old noble family of Cavendish, he was educated at Eton College and the University of Cambridge, graduating in 1891 the same year as his father's death. His father was William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire.

Victor Christian William Cavendish, 9. Duke of Devonshire KG GCMG GCVO PC JP FRS [1] (* 31. Mai 1868 in Marylebone, London; † 6. Victor Christian William Cavendish, 9th Duke of Devonshire KG, GCMG, GCVO, TD, PC, JP, FRS (31 May 1868 – 6 May 1938), known as Victor Cavendish until 1908, was a British peer and politician who served as Governor General of Canada.
Victor Cavendish est le fils aîné d’Emma Elizabeth Lascelles et de lord Edward Cavendish, député syndicaliste libéral pour West Derbyshire. Victor Cavendish, 9th Duke of Devonshire. Their only son, the sixth Duke, served as Lord Chamberlain of the Household from 1827 to 1828 and from 1830 to 1834. Known as the "Bachelor Duke", he never married and on his death in 1858 the barony of Clifford fell into abeyance between his sisters.
