Italo Balbo nació en Quartesana, fracción del municipio de Ferrara. Hijo de Camillo Balbo y de Malvina Zuffi, ambos maestros de primaria. Después del nacimiento, la familia Balbo se transfirió a Ferrara. En 1911, huye de su casa y se adhiere a una expedición militar, organizada por Ricciotti Garibaldi, para liberar a Albania del control turco.
Italo Balbo (født 6. juni 1896, død 28. juni 1940) var en italiensk sortskjorte (Camicie Nere, eller CCNN) leder, luftmarskal (Maresciallo dell'Aria), generalguvernør over Libyen, øverstkommanderende i Italiensk Nordafrika (Africa Settentrionale Italiana, eller ASI), og den italienske diktator Benito Mussolinis "kronprins".
Biografie. Italo Balbo diende bij het Italiaanse Alpen Korps van 1915 tot 1915. Gedurende de jaren tussen 1915 en 1926 werd hij drie keer onderscheiden voor zijn vliegkunsten. In 1920 werd hij aangesteld als secretaris voor de Italiaanse Fascistische Partij in Ferrara. Op 24 en 25 maart 1921 leidde hij 4000 militairen in de Slag om Ravanna.

Such accounts were essentially exercises in nostalgia, remembering a time when Italy counted for something on the world stage (Baldassini Reference Baldassini 2008 , 62–63).
