Karl Anton was born at Krauchenwies Castle in Sigmaringen, the second child of Karl, Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1785–1853) and the French princess Marie Antoinette Murat (1793–1847). Karl Anton studied law in Geneva, at the Universities of Tübingen and Göttingen , and at the Humboldt University of Berlin .
Stéphanie de Beauharnais. Princess Josephine Friederike Luise of Baden (21 October 1813 – 19 June 1900) was Princess of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen from 27 August 1848 to 7 December 1849 during the brief reign of her husband, Prince Karl Anton. Josephine was the second daughter of Charles, Grand Duke of Baden, and Stéphanie de Beauharnais.
Carol I of Romania, [1] original name Prince Karl Eitel Friedrich Zephyrinus Ludwig of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, later simply of Hohenzollern (20 April 1839 - 10 October [ O.S. 27 September] 1914), German prince, was elected Domnitor (Prince) of Romania on 20 April 1866, following the overthrow of Alexandru Ioan Cuza. After the death of her first husband, she married in 1848 Charles, Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen as his second wife. Charles was a widower of Princess Marie Antoinette Murat, niece of Joachim Murat, King of the Two Sicilies, by whom he already had four children.
