We do come across mentions of the Prince of Wales in Italy in other sources, the most useful of which are the almost daily letters he wrote from March 1918 through to November 1918, to his mistress, Mrs Freda Dudley Ward.. These were published as ‘Letters to a Prince’ edited by Rupert Godfrey.

At the time, Freda Dudley Ward was married to Liberal MP William Dudley Ward and Edward VIII was known to have written hundreds of letters to her, many of which were destroyed or lost.

Their affair continued until 1934, only ending when Edward became involved with American socialite Mrs Simpson, who he met in 1930.
