Frances grew up familiar with court life, as Charles Brandon was the closest companion of Henry VIII, and the king's sister was familiar with his queen, Catherine of Aragon. A portrait at Petworth (see Collins Baker, 'Catalogue of the Petworth Collection of Pictures', 1920) appears to represent the same woman on a larger scale and is inscribed with the date 1560 and the sitter's age (24).

Frances Brandon was born 16 July 1517 to Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk (c1484-1545) and Mary Tudor (1496-1533) and died 21 November 1559 of unspecified causes. She married Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Suffolk (1517-1554) May 1533 JL .
