Churchill helped James II defeat Monmouth (1685), but switched allegiance in support of the Protestant Glorious Revolution (1688). He began his military career as an ensign in the Foot Guards, and served abroad at the English colony of Tangier. During the Franco-Dutch War (1672–1679), he served as part of an English contingent in French service.
