Wesley represented Trim in the Irish House of Commons from 1757 until 1758, when he succeeded his father as 2nd Baron Mornington. In 1759 he was appointed Custos Rotulorum of Meath and in 1760, in recognition of his musical and philanthropic achievements, he was created Viscount Wellesley, of Dangan Castle in the County of Meath, and Earl of Mornington.
Family and Education. b. 20 June 1760, 1st s. of Garret Wesley, 1st Earl of Mornington [I], and bro. of Sir Arthur Wellesley*, Hon. Henry Wellesley* and Hon. William Wellesley Pole*.
He was son of Henry Colley, brother of Henry Colley, father of Garret Wesley, 1st Earl of Mornington, and grandfather of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. [1] He took the name Wesley, which later generations changed back the older form Wellesley, on inheriting the estates of his cousin Garret Wesley.
Wellesley (Wesley), Richard Colley (1760–1842), Marquis Wellesley , governor-general of Bengal and lord lieutenant of Ireland, was born 20 June 1760 at Dangan Castle, Co. Meath, eldest child of Garret Wesley (qv), 1st Viscount Wellesley and earl of Mornington, and Anne, eldest daughter of Arthur Hill-Trevor, 1st Viscount Duncannon.
