George Edward Archibald Augustus FitzGeorge Hamilton was the only son of Sir Archibald Hamilton, 5th Baronet, and his first wife, Olga FitzGeorge, the only daughter and child of Rear Admiral Sir Adolphus FitzGeorge and his first wife, Sophia Jane Holden. He was the heir to the Hamilton baronetcies of Trebinshun House and Marlborough House.

Adolphus FitzGeorge was born 30 January 1846, the second son of Prince George, Duke of Cambridge and the actress Sarah Fairbrother. His parents subsequently went through a form of marriage in contravention of the Royal Marriages Act 1772, when his mother was pregnant with his youngest brother.
