Henceforth Georg was styled as His Serene Highness Duke Georg of Mecklenburg, Count of Carlow. In order to clear up any confusion regarding the status of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the Carlow title was abolished for Duke Georg and his descendants in accordance with a declaration from the House of Mecklenburg-Schwerin on 18 December 1950.

Like the neighbouring Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin , it was a sovereign member state of the German Confederation and became a federated state of the North German Confederation and finally of the German Empire upon the unification in 1871.
