"The Monster," which Benigni directed and helped to write, is essentially a series of racy visual double-entendres loosely strung around the silliest of stories. Although as airheaded as any of Carrey's romps, the film has the more light-handed tone of a classic European farce, in which Benigni executes his bawdy charades with the baggy-pants exaggeration of a traditional clown.
