Now, if you know about Barbara Villiers, you’ll understand how cheeky the above painting of her is. There she is, known mistress of Charles II, holding his illegitimate child in her hands, and ironically portraying the Virgin Mary!
BARBARA VILLIERS CLEVELAND, DUCHESS OF (1641-1709), mistress of the English king Charles II., was the daughter of William Villiers, 2nd Viscount Grandison (d. 1643), by his wife Mary (d. 1684), daughter of Paul, 1st Viscount Bayning.

Barbara Villiers continued her affair with Chesterfield, as much to ignite the King’s jealousy and she seemed to revel in the humiliation of her rival Lady Elizabeth. This became of course common knowledge with the gossip at court and would have made its way back to the worried Duke and Duchess.

Barbara Villiers nasceu como a única filha de William Villiers, 2.° Visconde Grandison (sendo portanto uma prima de George Villiers, 2.º Duque de Buckingham), e da herdeira Mary Bayning. No outono de 1643 , Lord Grandison morreu numa batalha, deixando sua esposa e filha numa situação financeira difícil.
