Writing to a friend in 1948, Taft stated his belief that “it would have been easy for the British and ourselves to establish a small Jewish State” in 1944, insisting that “[t]he Arabs would have been unable to make ‘any effective protest . . . in the face of the overwhelming military force’ of the American and British armies at that time” (see Wunderlin, ed., Taft Papers, vol. 3, 373).
