Frances Brandon was a granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and the mother of Queen Jane Grey. Frances Brandon was the second child and eldest daughter of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, and his wife Mary Tudor, widow of King Louis XII of France and thus known in England as "the French Queen". She was thus a niece of King Henry VIII.

Frances Brandon was born 16 July 1517 to Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk (c1484-1545) and Mary Tudor (1496-1533) and died 21 November 1559 of unspecified causes. She married Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Suffolk (1517-1554) May 1533 JL .
As she was married in 1538 to her stepbrother, John Basset, who was eighteen, it seems likely that she was about the same age as her husband and thus would have been born around 1520 or so–thereby making it likely that her name was inspired by Frances Brandon’s.
