Introduction Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh (5 November 1864 – 7 January 1933) was an English-born artist who worked in Scotland, and whose design work became one of the defining features of the Glasgow Style during the 1890s to 1900s.

Margaret MacDonald had one elder brother, Charles, and two younger brothers, John Stewart and Archibald Campbell, and one younger sister Frances, who was born in 1873. 1876 John MacDonald became the estate agent for the Heathcotes, a large land owning family, and the MacDonalds moved into the eighteenth century Chesterton Hall in Staffordshire, one of the most prestigious houses in the area.
