  1. Introduction. Reginald Pole was born in March 1500, the fourth child of Sir Richard Pole and Margaret Pole, niece of King Edward IV and later countess of Salisbury. In 1511, Pole matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford, graduating as Bachelor of Arts in 1515. In April 1521, he was sent by Henry VIII to study at the University of Padua.

His mother was the daughter of George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence and of his wife, Isabel Neville. His grandfather was the younger brother of Edward IV and Richard III.
