Anselm may have been a son of John FitzGilbert (The Marshal) and his second wife Sybil de Salisbury. Hardly anything is known about Anselm Marshal. He is mentioned in the Histoire de Guillaume le Marechal as having the standard knightly values of prowess and loyalty, and as taking part in a great tournament at Lagni-sur-Marne in about 1180.
