21 de nov. de 2018 · Little is known about the two years Marshal subsequently spent in the Holy Land on crusade, but he certainly sailed for Jerusalem in the winter of 1183. Marshal returned to England in either 1185 or 1186, joining the court of Henry II in the final years of the latter’s reign. 5. He fought and almost killed Richard the Lionheart.

Indeed, even seven years later, a 50-year-old William Marshal apparently scaled the walls of a French castle at the centre of a rebellion and seized it successfully whilst awaiting reinforcements. William Marshal's involvement in the enactment and promotion of the Magna Carta was a defining feature of his political career, particularly during his tenure as the Regent of England. The Magna Carta, originally sealed by King John in 1215, emerged from the turbulent relationships between the monarch and his barons, driven by grievances over heavy taxation and arbitrary rule.
Yet William Marshal – or William the Marshal – was one of the greatest men ever to have lived and arguably the greatest ever Englishman. Although inexplicably omitted from schoolroom history he has a dozen claims to fame. He unhorsed Richard, the future King Richard I, the Lionheart, in battle and spared his life.
