Lou Henry Hoover died of a heart ailment on January 7, 1944, in New York City. Because Lou Henry Hoover was the wife of the President who failed to solve the Great Depression -- and because she preceded Eleanor Roosevelt, the woman who remade the position of First Lady -- her contemporaries, as well as historians, have tended to disparage or overlook her achievements.
