Motijhil (also Motijheel, literal translation: Pearl Lake ), also known as Company's Lake due to its association with the East India Company, [1] is a horse-shoe shaped lake in Murshidabad, West Bengal, India. [2] [3] It was created by Nawazish Muhammad Khan, the son-in-law of Nawab Alivardi Khan.

Ghaseti Begum married her paternal cousin, Nawazish Muhammad Khan, who was the Naib Nazim of Dhaka. Being childless, the couple adopted Ikram ud-Daulah, the son of her younger sister Amina Begum. But Ikram ud-Daulah died of smallpox at a young age. Soon after Nawazish Muhammad also died from grief.
Nawazish Muhammad Khan married Meherunnissa, known as ghaseti begum, the eldest daughter of Alivardi Khan. After the accession of Alivardi Khan to the throne of Murshidabad, Nawazish was appointed diwan of crown lands and naib nazim of Dhaka with Husain Quli Khan as his deputy. He was given the title of Shahmat Jang.
Nawazish Muhammad Khan ruled through his wife Ghaseti Begum and his deputy Husain Quli Khan. Jasarat Khan, appointed by Alivardi Khan , was the Naib Nazim during the Battle of Plassey in 1757, the year which heralded great political change in Bengal.
The rebel army was being led by Alivardi Khan with Nandalal and Nawazish Muhammad Khan as his deputies. They opposing armies marched on to Giria (Battle of Giria), a village on the banks of the river Bhagirathi for a showdown on 26 April 1740.
