Francis Lord Rawdon, second Earl of Moira and later Marquis of Hastings, was born into an Anglo-Irish family in Moira, County Down, Ireland in 1754. His father, John Rawdon, was the first Earl of Moira and served as a peer in the Irish parliament. Rawdon received his education at Harrow, England, and embarked on his military career at age fifteen.
In 1793, Rawdon-Hastings returned to military service to fight against the French. He became the Earl of Moira after the passing of his father, and he was appointed major general. He began his long service in the House of Lords in 1793 as well.

The sitter here was born the Hon. Francis Rawdon, called Lord Rawdon from 1762, created Baron Rawdon in his own right in 1783; he added Hastings to his surname in 1789 in accordance with his uncle’s will; he succeeded his father as the Earl of Moira in 1793 and was made Marquess of Hastings in 1816.
