The enterprise was conceived by Head of Plays Gerald Savory (later to become notorious as the arbitrary wiper of much classic drama – funnily enough, all 26 episodes of Churchill’s People are very much still with us) in the heady days of early 1973.

Concept and creative process. Churchill's book 'The History of the English Speaking Peoples' was the basis for this 26 part drama series and the titles reflected this broad canvas. Coins of the realm revolving in space were joined by union tokens, all turning like cogs in a wheel in a visual metaphor of the industrial revolution.
