Marie Emilie Thérèse Joly de Choin est née en 1670. Elle est la fille du grand bailli de Bourg en Bresse. Elle fut appelée à la cour de Versailles par sa tante, Anne Marie, comtesse de Bury, « une femme d'une grande vertu, d'une grande douceur et d'une grande politesse, avec de l'esprit et de la conduite» nous dit Saint-Simon.
