  6. Archibald Hamilton was the eldest son of James, 5th Duke of Hamilton, by his third wife, Anne Spencer. His half-brother was James, 6th Duke, whose two sons (Archibald's nephews) James George and Douglas succeeded him as 7th and 8th Dukes, respectively. When Douglas Hamilton died without children, Archibald succeeded him as 9th Duke.

  7. The Hamilton Mausoleum was a pet project of Alexander, 10th Duke: another means to reflect the glory and eminence of the premier peers in Scotland. Started in 1842 and completed in 1858, the Mausoleum stands testament both to the power of the Hamilton legacy and to Alexander’s deep love of the classical world.
