After moving around, her family settled in Austria at the Schloss Cumberland and her father became an honorary general in the British army before he passed away in 1878.

Princess Frederica was born on the 9 January 1848 in Hanover, the eldest daughter of George, the Hereditary Prince of Hanover and Princess Marie of Saxe-Altenburg.
