Calamity Jane naît sous le nom de Martha Jane Cannary le 1er mai 1852 à Princeton au Missouri, dans une famille de paysans. Elle est l'aînée d'une fratrie composée de quatre filles et de deux garçons. Leurs parents laissant souvent les six enfants livrés à eux-mêmes, elle apprend très tôt à s'occuper d'eux.
