Virginia was born on 29 May 1568, two years before her parents married. She was the only child of Cosimo I de' Medici, grand duke of Tuscany, and his second wife Camilla Martelli.
Va néixer el 29 de maig de 1568 a la ciutat de Florència, capital del Ducat de Florència, sent filla del duc Cosme I de Mèdici i Camilla Martelli. Fou neta per línia paterna de Giovanni dalle Bande Nere i Maria Salviati. Fou germana, per part de pare, dels ducs Francesc I i Ferran I de Mèdici, i de Lucrècia de Mèdici, casada amb Alfons II d'Este .

In his many pen-and-wash drawings featuring religious, mythological, or heraldic images, Ligozzi demonstrated a greater originality. He is known best for his depictions of fauna and flora, which reflect the nascent scientific pursuits of the Medici. His botanically correct depictions of plants can even include exquisitely observed root systems.
