  2. Royal Air Force College Cranwell is probably one of the most famous landmarks in Royal Air Force (RAF) history. Its long history dates back to 1918 after the amalgamation of the Royal Naval Air Service and Royal Flying Corps who sought to establish a single unit where officers could be trained to fly.

  5. The north airfield situated behind the impressive RAF College Hall is grass-surfaced and used for gliding and can best be seen from the ‘Lighter-Than-Air Road’ which leads north from the B1429. The road name commemorates the early use of the site as a RNAS airship training station, selected in 1914 because of its flatness, lack of dykes and proximity to coastal bombing and gunnery ranges.

    The College of Air Warfare moved to Cranwell in 1972 when RAF Manby closed down which included the Staff Nav Course and the Aero Systems Course for Navigators. I attended the Staff Nav Course in 1973; I completed it mid tour on 51 Sqn at Wyton. I was destined to become the NImrod R staff officer at 1 Gp in 1977.

No.3 Flying Training School (FTS), training navigators and non-commissioned aircrew, is also based here.
