Elisabeth of Hesse (4 March 1502 – 6 December 1557) was Hereditary Princess of Saxony in 1519-1537 by marriage to John of Saxony. After the death of her husband, she managed her Wittum , (estates that were assigned to her upon marriage) the Saxon districts of Rochlitz and Kriebstein between 1537 and 1547, earning her the name Elisabeth of Rochlitz .
This oil sketch was a preliminary work related to a full-length portrait painting, which also makes it possible to identify the sitter. The painting was created in 1564, in the course of a series of portraits of the Saxon Elector’s family.
14 de oct. de 2023 · However it is more likely that the boy in A Prince of Saxony is Johann, Duke of Saxony (1498 - 1537) and the subject of A Princess of Saxony is his wife, Elisabeth of Hesse. Measuring 43.4cm x 34.3cm, A Princess of Saxony is done in oils on panel and like many of Cranach's portraits it enjoys a bold composition and strong colors.

Life. Elisabeth was born in Birkenfeld, the daughter of Frederick III, Elector Palatine, and his wife, Marie of Brandenburg-Kulmbach. Elisabeth was the third child of the couple and the second to reached adulthood. On 12 June 1558 in Weimar, Elisabeth married John Frederick II, Duke of Saxony, eldest son of John Frederick I, Elector of Saxony.
