Daniel Chalmers, a charming con man, gets reacquainted with his protege, Remington Steele, when the two plan a sting operation against Albert Hoskins, a crooked casino owner who has murdered Chalmers' associate. Meantime, Hoskins hires Laura Holt to find Chalmers, claiming that he owes him money, actually, he is planning to kill Chalmers.
To solve the problem, Laura invents a fictitious male superior whom she names Remington Steele. Through a series of events that unfold in the first episode, "License to Steele," a former thief and con man, whose real name is never revealed, assumes the identity of Remington Steele. Behind the scenes, Laura remains firmly in charge.
Laura is reunited with a former lover when he seeks the help of Remington Steele investigations after finding a corpse in vat of wine. The investigation eventually leads to a nearby monastery, where Steele and Laura learn the identity of the corpse as well as the identity of the killer.
