17 de jun. de 2012 · Born in the Naiman tribe, Toregene was given as wife to Qudu, the noble of the Merkit clan at first. But Rashid-al-Din Hamadani named his first husband as Dair Usun of the Merkits. When Genghis conquered the Merkits in 1204, he gave Toregene to Ögedei as his second wife. While Ögedei's first wife had no sons, Toregene gave birth to five sons.
However, in the spring of 1242 another of Ögedei Khan's widows, Töregene Khatun, assumed complete power as regent with the support of her sons and Chagatai. She took on the title of Great Khatun and replaced Ögödei's ministers with her own. One of the replacements was Fatima, who became her most influential cabinet member.
Khatun is a title meaning ‘queen’ or ‘empress’. Toregene was married to Genghis Khan’s third son Ogedei and served as regent after her husband’s death from 1241 until 1246, ruling over the largest empire in the world.
