Wednesday 11th September, 2019. Local writer Claire Casey writes about the tragic tale of Marjorie Bruce – daughter of the famous King Robert the Bruce, hero of Scotland’s Wars of Independence. Another legend that has become associated with Paisley Abbey is the death of Princess Marjorie Bruce, who was the daughter of Robert the Bruce.

Marjorie's parents were said to have been very much in love, Robert the Bruce did not remarry until Marjorie was six years old. In 1302, Robert took as his second wife, the thirteen year old Elizabeth de Burgh , daughter of Richard Óg de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster, (one of Edward's most prominent Anglo-Irish supporters) and Margarite de Burgh, Elizabeth became the young Marjorie's stepmother.

The only child of Robert I's first marriage, and named after her grandmother who had brought the earldom of Carrick into the Bruce family, Marjorie's surrender as a hostage had been a condition of her father's submission in August 1297, though he complied in neither.
11 de dic. de 2023 · In October 1317, Marjorie Bruce was killed in a fall from her horse. (See Research Notes) She was buried at Paisley Abbey, and Walter Stewart gifted the lands of Largs (which he had recently received from the king as a reward for his valor in battle) to the Abbey in return for prayers for the safety of the soul of Marjorie Bruce and himself.

10 de jul. de 2015 · Poor little Marjorie Bruce was dead at the tender age of 19 – the same as her mother before her – having lived through some of the most turbulent years of Scottish history. Had she lived she would have seen her son succeed her brother, David II, on the Scots throne as King Robert II, founder of the Stewart dynasty. *.
