Biography. Vito Scotti was born in San Francisco but spent his early years in Italy until moving back to New York with his mother, where she was a performer in the Italian theater. It was there that Scotti learned the farcical comedy and exaggerated mannerisms that would define his long career in supporting roles on both film and television.

He was indispensable to TV sitcoms: Scotti starred during the 1954 season of Life with Luigi (replacing J. Carroll Naish), then appeared as gesticulating Latin types in a score of comedy programs, notably The Dick Van Dyke Show (as eccentric Italian housepainter Vito Giotto) and The Flying Nun (as ever-suspicious Puerto Rican police captain Gaspar Fomento).
