Curtiss’s mother, Lua Andrews Curtiss, was left to raise young Glenn and his younger sister, Rutha. At age 6, Rutha came down with meningitis, which quickly caused her to become deaf. Lua Curtiss moved her small family to Rochester, New York, so Rutha could attend the Western New York Institute for Deaf-Mutes, now known as the Rochester School for the Deaf.
