14 de may. de 2024 · John Rutledge lived between 1739 and 1800, and served as a politician, governor and judge during the formative years of the United States. Rutledge was both a witness and participant in the establishment and signing of both the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution and eventually became the second Supreme Court Chief Justice to serve in the United States.
On July 1, 1795, President George Washington tapped Rutledge to be Chief Justice of the United States. He served in that position as a recess appointee until he was officially nominated to the senate on December 10, 1795. His nomination was rejected December 15, 1795. Rutledge died on July 18, 1800, at the age of sixty.

The eldest son of Dr. John Rutledge and Sarah Hext, he studied law with his uncle Andrew Rutledge and with James Parsons in Charleston before attending the Middle Temple in London.
