Benjamin Cardozo was born May 24, 1870 in New York City to Rebecca Nathan and Albert Cardozo. Cardozo’s father served on the New York Supreme Court (New York’s trial court) until he resigned due a judicial corruption scandal. Afterwards, his father continued his legal career as a successful lawyer.

Born in 1870, Benjamin Cardozo was the son of Judge Albert Cardozo and Rebecca Nathan. Albert was a vice president and trustee of Congregation Shearith Israel, and Benjamin celebrated his bar mitzvah there. The family lived a well-mannered upper-class life which might have been depicted in an Edith Wharton novel.

As one of America's most influential judges, first on New York State's Court of Appeals and then on the United States Supreme Court, Cardozo (1870-1938) oversaw this transformation daily.
