Eighth Blackbird has won four Grammy Awards for Best Small Ensemble/Chamber Music Performance over its 25-year history and has become “a brand-name defined by adventure, vibrancy and quality.” (Detroit Free Press). Lisa is a 2013 recipient of Chicago’s prestigious 3Arts Award, and recently has enjoyed doing some composing and arranging for Eighth Blackbird. She co-produced her first album When We Are Inhuman (released August 2019) with Bryce Dessner which features her arrangements of songs by Will Oldham, aka Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy.
The name “Eighth Blackbird” derives from the eighth stanza of Wallace Stevens’s evocative, imagistic poem, Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird: “I know noble accents / And lucid, inescapable rhythms; / But I know, too, / That the blackbird is involved / In what I know.”. Lisa Kaplan is a Steinway Artist.
Eighth Blackbird will be hosting chamber ensembles and composers in Williams Bay, WI at Yerkes Observatory from May 28th - June 11th, 2024. We had such a blast in 2023, we couldn’t stay away! Applications open November 1st, 2023 and close January 7th, 2024 - We can’t wait to see your applications.
