He was the son of Francis Arthur Baring, 4th Baron Northbrook and Evelyn Gladys Isabella Charles. He married Rowena Margaret Manning, daughter of Brig.-Gen. Sir William Henry Manning, on 27 January 1951.

He became a trainee chartered accountant at Dixon Wilson & Co from 1976 to 1980. He then worked at Baring Brothers & Co as a credit analyst between 1981 and 1983.
