84. John L. Lewis, one of the most controversial labor leaders in history, was instrumental in revolutionizing labor in America. He became President of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) in 1920 and, for 40 years, his administration ruled the union. He is recognized for advocating mechanization in the mines, as well as war-time strikes.
Born in 1880 to Welsh immigrants in the coal-mining town of Lucas, IA, John Llewellyn Lewis followed his father and brother into the mines after he completed his formal schooling at the age of 16.While working at the Big Hill mine, Lewis served as the recording secretary for the UMWA local.

He was born in Lucas, Iowa, the son of an immigrant Welsh coal miner. Lewis began his mining career at age 17. In his early 20s, he left the Lucas mines for a five-year sojourn through the West.

After splitting with the American Federation of Labor (AFL) over the unionization of mass-production industries, he formed the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) and was its president (1935–40).
