Robert, Earl of Crewe was the only son of Richard Monckton Milnes, 1 st Baron Houghton and the Hon. Arabella Crewe. He succeeded to the title after the death of his father in 1885. He joined Gladstone’s Liberal government and the Home Rule section of the party and was made Liberal whip in 1885.
