Hans war das dritte Kind des späteren preußischen Generals der Infanterie Richard von Seeckt (1833–1909) und dessen Ehefrau Auguste. Nach dem Abitur trat Seeckt 1885 in das Kaiser Alexander Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 1 der Preußischen Armee ein und durchlief eine steile militärische Karriere.
