Garnet Wolseley. One of the most popular British generals of the nineteenth century, Garnet Wolseley (1833-1913) is little known today outside of military and academic circles. Recognized in his own time for resourcefulness, bravery, and strong organizational skills, Wolseley transformed the British army into a modern fighting force.

A superb WW1 Tyneside Scottish piper's dirk, named piper, Lance Corporal Garnet Wolseley Fyfe, KIA wearing this dirk on the 1st July 1916 as he piped the 20th Service Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers over no mans land. It is exceptionally rare to get one of these dirks in such good condition.
Seen from another angle, Wolseley's career reflects a number of weaknesses. To control a global empire Britain had a powerful navy but only a small army. Its ability to deploy a force of limited size throughout the world, almost always against untrained and underequipped native armies, gave the dangerous and ultimately disastrous illusion that Britain was as formidable by land as it was by sea.
