The son of Sir George Douglas, James succeeded to the earldom of his father-in-law, James Douglas, 3rd Earl of Morton, in 1548.

In the Middle Ages the Douglas family owned extensive estates in Fife (Aberdour), Midlothian (Dalkeith), Berwickshire, Peeblesshire and elsewhere, and were created Earls of Morton in 1458.
