Her independence and future were sharply curtailed when she lost her sight at age 14. Her blindness greatly impacted the whole family.

Oktober 1928 in De Smet, South Dakota) war die ältere Schwester der Schriftstellerin Laura Ingalls Wilder und Vorbild für die Figur der Mary in der Fernsehserie Unsere kleine Farm. Sie wurde als erste Tochter von Charles und Caroline Ingalls geboren.
Mary Ingalls bodde tillsammans med sina föräldrar i De Smet fram till deras död, efter det bodde hon med sin syster Grace och sedan med sin andra syster, Carrie. Hon gifte sig aldrig. Ingalls avled vid 63 års ålder av lunginflammation samt i sviterna av en stroke.
