Yet William Marshal – or William the Marshal – was one of the greatest men ever to have lived and arguably the greatest ever Englishman. Although inexplicably omitted from schoolroom history he has a dozen claims to fame. He unhorsed Richard, the future King Richard I, the Lionheart, in battle and spared his life.

Indeed, even seven years later, a 50-year-old William Marshal apparently scaled the walls of a French castle at the centre of a rebellion and seized it successfully whilst awaiting reinforcements. William Marshal, II conde de Pembroke (Francés: Guillaume le Maréchal) (1190 – 6 de abril de 1231) fue un noble medieval inglés y uno de los garantes de la Carta Magna.
