Boris III was a botanist and, although a hunter, a gentleman who loved his wife and children, abhorred torturing criminals and would never sign a death warrant during his 25-year reign. He privately called himself “The mender of broken dishes,” and proclaimed to his aides, “You’ll never make a Hitler out of me!”.
Boris III, Tsar of Bulgaria (January 30, 1894 – August 28, 1943), originally Boris Klemens Robert Maria Pius Ludwig Stanislaus Xaver (Boris Clement Robert Mary Pius Louis Stanislaus Xavier), son of Ferdinand I, came to the throne in 1918 upon the abdication of his father, following Bulgaria's defeat in World War I.
After 1918, Vrana became the main personal home of King Boris III. It was here that many important historical events took place. In the early hours of June 9th, 1923, the leaders of the coup against Alexander Stamboliyski, Prof. Alexander Tsankov, Kimon Georgiev, Dimo Kazasov, and others arrived Vrana to force the head of state to accept and legalize the performed plot.
