Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen Her marriage to William Duke of Clarence , third son of George III and 27 years her senior, was arranged as a result of the death in childbirth of the Prince Regent's only daughter, Princess Charlotte of Wales in 1817, which left no heir to the throne in the third generation.

Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen (Adelaide Erna Caroline Marie Elisabeth; 16 August 1891 – 25 April 1971), later Princess Adalbert of Prussia, was a daughter of Prince Frederick John of Saxe-Meiningen and his wife Countess Adelaide of Lippe-Biesterfeld.
Life. Adelaide was born on 13 August 1792 at Meiningen, Thuringia, Germany. She was the first child of George I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen and Luise Eleonore. At her baptism, she had twenty-one godparents, including: her mother. Maria Theresa of Naples and Sicily, the Holy Roman Empress. Maria Carolina of Austria, the Queen of Naples and Sicily.
