The basic equations formulated by him play a central role in numerical weather prediction, in the simulation of blood flow in the body and in countless other important applications.
On 13 August 1819 one of the greatest of Victorian scientists, Sir George Gabriel Stokes, was born youngest son of the Rector of Skreen on the wild and remote Atlantic coast of Ireland. He was to die, after fifty-three years in the most famous mathematical chair in Cambridge, on 1 February 1903.
