History and Patronage: The history of this very beautiful painting by Filippino Lippi cannot be fully reconstructed prior to 1900, when it was with the German dealer Nikolaus Steinmeyer in Cologne; it was purchased from the famous Duveen firm by the German-born financier Jules Bache in 1928 and bequeathed to The Met.

Figlio di un altro celebre artista, Fra Filippo Lippi, il giovane Filippino crebbe in un ambiente artistico e fu influenzato fin da piccolo dall’opera del padre, un monaco e pittore di grande talento.

En 1472, à l'âge de quatorze ou quinze ans, Filippino entra dans l'atelier florentin d'une toute autre personnalité, Sandro Botticelli, qui, comme l'écrit également Vasari, avait excellé parmi les élèves de son père Filippo, comprenant et assimilant mieux son style que ses autres élèves.
Filippino Lippi completed his apprenticeship in the workshop of Botticelli, who had been a pupil of Filippino's father. In 1472 the records of the painters' guild record that Botticelli had only Filippino Lippi as an assistant. His first works greatly resemble those of Botticelli, but with less sensitivity and subtlety.
Filippino (' little Filippo') was probably born in Prato in 1457 following the elopement of his father Fra Filippo Lippi and Lucrezia Buti. Filippino was a leading Florentine exponent of the tradition of great fresco cycles, as well as an accomplished painter on panel.
