Alberto Giacometti nació el 10 de octubre de 1901 en Borgonovo, un pueblito de Suiza. Se crió en el valle alpino de Bregaglia, a unos pocos kilómetros del límite con Italia. Desde niño y hasta muy joven pasó su vida dentro del estudio de su padre, el pintor post-impresionista, Giovanni Giacometti (1868-1933), quien compartió con su hijo sus propios pensamientos en materia de arte.
Con catorce años, en 1914–15, Alberto Giacometti esculpe el busto de su hermano Diego en el estudio de su padre y, hacia 1915, crea su primera pintura al óleo, Naturaleza muerta con manzanas. Tanto su padre como su padrino, el pintor simbolista Cuno Amiet (1868–1961), serán figuras fundamentales en la evolución artística del joven Alberto.
